11 Amish Home Remedies for Ear Infections

The Amish community is distinctive for their traditional lifestyle – and that applies to health as well. While the Amish seek modern medical care when needed, they use strictly natural remedies for minor ailments. These are some of the most commonly used natural remedies for ear infection in the Amish community. There are discussed for cultural interest only. We are not doctors nor are we trying to offer medical advice. Consult with a physician before adding anything to your medical regimen.

1. Garlic – Garlic is well known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, both of which make it a natural choice for treating ear infection. The Amish use it most commonly in the form of garlic oil, which is made by heating a few sliced cloves of garlic in two tbsp of oil (preferably sesame or mustard oil). Once the oil darkens, strain out the garlic and use immediately; it usually takes just a few drops of the warm oil to provide relief.

2. Ear candle – Ear candles are used by the Amish to treat ear infection as well as to remove excess earwax. If you’ve never tried it before, it’s very simple. Soak a piece of linen in melted paraffin and wrap it around a dowel. Once the paraffin has dried, place the resulting cone in the ear and light the other end. Make sure to stay upright during this treatment. The Amish still make their own ear candles, but if you’d rather make this simple home remedy even easier, you can buy premade ear candles at many stores and online (or at an Amish market, if you live near an Amish community).

3. Salt – Salt is a very effective home remedy for ear infection which everyone has in their kitchen. Simply heat up one cup of salt, then pour the hot salt into a sock and tie it closed. Lay down with the heated salt pressed to the affected ear. This traditional Amish remedy helps pull fluid from the ear and helps to relieve the pain that an ear infection can cause.

4. Apple cider vinegar – Apple cider vinegar has potent antimicrobial properties which make it a great choice for treating ear infection. The Amish use apple cider vinegar for a variety of purposes, including treating ear infections. Mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar and soak a cotton ball in the mixture. Apply the cotton ball to the affected ear and leave in place for 5 minutes, then remove and discard. You can repeat this treatment as needed until the ear infection is completely cleared.

5. Warm Water – Heat can be helpful in relieving the pain of an ear infection and it’s one of the easiest of all Amish home remedies. Just soak a cloth in warm water (or use a hot water bottle) and press it to the affected ear. The relief is almost immediate. However, this isn’t a treatment which you can use all day, although you can use heat to relieve the pain of your infection several times per day until your ear infection has cleared up.

6. Basil – Basil leaves are another Amish home remedy for ear infection. Crush basil leaves to get juice, then apply the juice around the ear, taking care not to get any in the ear canal. A mixture of basil juice and mustard oil also works well and is applied in the same way, again making sure not to get any in the ear canal.

7. Onion Juice – One of the many nutritional benefits of onions is that they help support hearing as well as helping to prevent many diseases of the ears. If you’re trying to treat an ear infection though, what you want is onion juice. You can either put an onion in a juicer or chop it and microwave it for about 10 minutes to extract the juice. Pour the juice in your ear and keep it there for 5-10 minutes, then tilt your head to allow fluids to drain. A piece of baked onion wrapped in cloth and pressed to the ear for about 10 minutes can also help drain an infected ear and provide some pain relief.

8. Olive Oil – The Amish community consider olive oil to be one of the most effective natural treatments for ear infection as well as form removing earwax. Just heat a little olive oil and put it in the ear while it’s still warm. The warm oil helps to dissolve earwax and olive oil’s antimicrobial properties will help to fight any infection. Use a cotton swab to remove earwax after treatment – be careful not to damage your eardrum as you do so. You can also use mustard oil for this treatment, since it has similar beneficial properties for treating infections.

9. Mango Leaf Juice – Mango leaves aren’t always the easiest thing to come by, but the Amish community in Florida swears by mango leaf juice for ear infections. Crush or grind mango leaves to extract the juice and warm it to slightly above room temperature before placing a few drops in the affected ear. This remedy provides almost immediate relief and promotes drainage of fluid from the ear.

10. Breast Milk – Breast milk is full of antibodies which happen to be very effective in treating ear infections. A few drops of breast milk in the ear every five hours for three days will provide significant relief or cure the infection entirely. As it happens, breast milk is also a great home remedy for small cuts and scrapes as well as for treating eye infections.

11. Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil is well known as a natural antimicrobial and can do wonders for ear infections and ear aches. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil into 2 tbsp olive or mustard oil, along with 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar and if you have it handy, 1 tsp of colloidal silver. Warm the mixture and place a few drops in the ear using a dropper. Tilt your head to allow the fluids to drain out – you should experience relief from pain and after using this remedy every three hours for a few days, the infection should be gone and your ear as good as new.
