The heroine of this story, Judith, is torn betweens her longing to be involved in the world of healing and her natural desire for love, marriage and children. Life is complicated for her, living in an Amish community, Trying to reconcile her life there with her aim of some kind of medical training. Her story is told with understanding and affection and makes the reader long for Judith’s dilemma to be resolved happily. Together with the love story there are interesting insights into Amish life and beliefs. A satisfying and well-written book.

Imagine, you are eight years old, watching your father die while you stand helplessly with him. That certainly would be a life altering experience. In Lancaster Hearts, author Ruth Price takes that experience and turns it into a well written novella.

The characters, both major and minor, are well developed and realistic. The plot line flows smoothly and I found myself reading the story in one sitting. I am eager to read more about these characters and hope Rice develops sequels. Highly recommend.

After having finished Road to Salvation, I had to read the rest of the series! At first I’d thought this and Road to Salvation had the same prologue, but then I realized this prologue showed the situation from Judith’s perspective, which was not only interesting but grounded me in the story immediately. Judith was a wildly interesting character, and while she had a strong faith and belief in the plain values of her community, she’s definitely not your typical Amish girl. In fact, this story kept me guessing all of the way through! It also gave a very sweet and surprisingly real take on two people falling in love and at the same time changing their community for the better.

Like Ms. Price’s other works, this book has a firm foundation in Christian faith and strong characterization. Even the minor characters really jump off of the page! It’s a shame my wife has dibs on these first, because I can’t wait to read the next one!
